Brand Strategy & Identity

A brand built on

strategy, not guesswork.

Full brand builds for founders starting from scratch and established businesses who’ve outgrown what they have. Strategy first, identity second – always in that order.

The problem

Most branding fails before the designer opens a brief.

The logo isn’t the problem. The positioning is. Most businesses go straight to visual identity before they’ve answered the questions that make identity meaningful – who you’re for, what you actually stand for, and why someone should choose you over the alternative.

The result is a brand that looks fine but says nothing. It won’t attract the right clients, it won’t hold up in paid media, and it won’t survive contact with a competitor who did the thinking first.

Strategy first

Positioning before pixels

Every engagement starts with the strategic work – messaging, audience definition, competitive differentiation. The visual identity comes from that, not the other way around.

Built to perform

Branding that works in paid media

A brand built by a performance marketer is built to convert. Every creative decision is considered through the lens of how it will work as an ad, a landing page, and a first impression.

No handoff chaos

Strategy and execution

You don’t need to brief a strategist, brief an agency, brief a designer, and then brief a marketer. One engagement, one person, no translation layer.

What's included

Two phases. One coherent brand.

Every brand engagement covers both phases in sequence. You can’t shortcut phase one and expect phase two to hold.

Phase 1 - Brand Strategy

◎

Positioning and messaging

Where you sit in the market, who you’re for, what you stand for, and how you say it. The document that everything else is built from.

▲

Audience definition

Precise profiles of who you’re trying to reach – not demographic summaries, but the actual motivations, objections, and language patterns that drive decisions.

◆

Competitive differentiation

A clear read of the competitive landscape and an honest answer to why someone should choose you. Including the honest answer when the current one isn’t good enough yet.

■

Brand voice and tone

How you write, what register you use, what you sound like in an ad versus an email versus a proposal. With examples and a what-not-to-do reference.

◇

Naming and tagline

If needed – brand name evaluation or creation, tagline options, and the rationale behind each. Tested against the positioning, not just what sounds good in a vacuum.

●

Brand strategy document

A single reference document that captures everything – usable by you, your team, any future agency, or any future hire who needs to understand what the brand stands for.

Phase 2 - Visual Identity

■

Logo system

Primary logo, secondary variants, usage rules, and clear-space guidelines. Built to work across digital, print, and whatever context your brand actually operates in.

●

Colour and typography

A palette with contrast ratios checked and usage rules defined. A type system with no more than two families and a clear hierarchy from headline to body to label.

◆

Brand guidelines document

Everything codified – colour values, font weights, logo rules, do-and-don’t examples, tone guidance. An HTML or PDF document your team and suppliers can actually use.

Process

How a brand engagement runs.

A typical engagement runs four to eight weeks depending on scope. Every stage is sequential – phase two doesn’t start until phase one is signed off.

Stage 1
Discovery

Understand the business, the market, and the gap

A structured discovery session covering your business model, your customers, your competitors, and what you’ve tried before. This is where the honest questions get asked – including the ones most brand agencies skip because the answers are uncomfortable.

Discovery session   Competitor audit   Customer analysis

Stage 2
Strategy

Build and validate the strategic foundation

Positioning statement, audience profiles, messaging hierarchy, voice and tone framework. These are presented as a working draft first, workshopped with you, and refined before anything is finalised. Strategy is a conversation, not a presentation.

Positioning statement   Messaging hierarchy   Voice and tone

Stage 3
Identity

Translate strategy into a visual system

Logo concepts, colour palette, typography, and usage rules – all developed directly from the strategic brief. You’ll see two to three distinct directions, pick one, and refine it through two rounds of revision until it’s right.

Stage 4
Handover

Everything packaged so it's actually usable

Final brand guidelines document, all logo files in the formats you’ll actually need, and a walkthrough session so you know how to use everything and what to brief any future supplier. No file dumps without context.

Who this is for

Two starting points. Same destination.

The deliverables are the same whether you’re building from scratch or rebuilding what you have. The questions asked in stage one are just different.

Founders

Starting from scratch

You have a business that’s working – or a clear idea of one – but no brand infrastructure to build on. You need the thinking and the identity built in the right order before you spend anything on marketing.

✓

No existing brand to constrain the brief

Full naming and positioning work available

✓

Built to support paid media from day one

✓

Covers everything from name to guidelines

Established businesses

Outgrown what you have

Your current brand made sense when you started but it no longer reflects what the business has become, who you’re selling to, or the level you’re operating at. The positioning needs rethinking before the visuals get refreshed.

✓

Honest audit of what’s working and what isn’t

✓

Repositioning built around where the business is now

✓

Identity refresh or full rebuild depending on the gap

✓

Team alignment session if needed

We'd had a logo for six years and never been able to explain what we actually did. Rob helped us work out the positioning first and everything else followed from that.

FAQs

Common questions about brand work.

Do I need the full brand build or can I just get the strategy?

Strategy-only engagements are available if you have a designer you want to work with or an existing visual identity you’re happy with. The positioning document, messaging framework, and voice and tone work are all available as standalone outputs. Most clients find the full build more efficient, but it’s not a requirement.

How long does a full brand build take?

Four to eight weeks for a full engagement, depending on scope and how quickly feedback rounds turn around. The strategy phase typically takes two to three weeks. Identity development takes two to four weeks on top of that. Rush timelines are possible but not recommended – brand work done under pressure rarely holds up.

What if I already have a logo I want to keep?

That’s fine. The strategy work is independent of the visual identity. If the positioning reveals the logo no longer fits, we’ll discuss it – but there’s no obligation to redesign anything. Most established business engagements involve a refresh rather than a full rebuild.

How does branding fit with paid media?

Better than most people think. A brand with clear positioning and a defined voice produces better ad creative, higher click-through rates, and stronger landing page conversion. The brands that perform best in paid media are the ones that have done the strategic work first – the messaging is tighter, the creative is more distinctive, and the offer is easier to communicate in three seconds.

Do you work with businesses outside Liverpool?

Yes. Brand strategy work is entirely remote – discovery sessions, workshops, and reviews all happen over video call. The location of the business has no bearing on the quality of the work.

Start with a conversation, not a brief.

A 30-minute call to understand where the business is, what the brand needs to do, and whether this is the right engagement for you. No pitch, no obligation.
